Muslim World League will stand ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with Jews against antisemitism

alarabiya.net reports: The Muslim World League [based in Mecca, Saudi Arabia] will stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Jews to build interreligious harmony, said its Secretary-General Sheikh Dr Mohammed Al-Issa, who received an award for his efforts to combat antisemitism while attending a virtual conference from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday. “We in the Muslim World League are proud to should to shoulder with our Jewish brothers and sisters to build understanding, respect, love and interreligious harmony,” said Sheikh al-Issa, who was speaking at a virtual conference organized by the Combat Antisemitism Movement and the American Sephardi Federation.

Israel hails UAE space launch bid

khaleetimes.com reports: “We wish the UAE the best of luck on the launch of this scientific mission,” the foreign ministry’s ‘Israel in the Gulf’ Twitter account wrote in Arabic. In another sign of warming ties between Israel and Gulf Arab nations, the Jewish state Tuesday congratulated the UAE on its bid to launch the first Arab space probe. The UAE announced last month that it would launch a mission to Mars in July. The unmanned probe, named ‘Hope’, has been billed as “the first interplanetary exploration undertaken” by an Arab state. Arab states in the Gulf like the UAE have been warming ties with Israel recently amid shared concerns over Iran. The UAE made its first publicly announced flight to Israel last month when its Etihad Airways sent medical aid for Palestinians to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Arab countries have called for a settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as a condition for normalising ties with the Jewish state. The Arab League frequently condemns Jewish settlement construction in the occupied West Bank as well as Israel’s policy toward the Gaza Strip. But Gulf Arab states have shown signs of a rapprochement with Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Oman in 2018, and Israeli athletes and officials have been increasingly allowed to visit the Gulf states.

Pro-Haftar official seeks Israeli support: report

aa.com (Anadolu Agency) reports: Deputy prime minister of Haftar-allied government in eastern Libya gives his first interview to an Israeli daily. A Libyan official close to renegade general Khalifa Haftar has sought support from Israel, an Israeli daily reported Wednesday. “We have never and will never be enemies with Tel Aviv, and we hope you will support us,” said Abdul Salam al-Badri, deputy prime minister of the ‘government’ in eastern Libya allied with Haftar, addressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu via Israel’s Makor Rishon daily.  Al-Badri, who is based in Haftar’s stronghold of Benghazi, called on Israel to join a new political initiative with Greece, Cyprus, Egypt and Lebanon to reach a joint maritime agreement.  He said the initiative is to confront the recent maritime border agreement signed between Turkey and the internationally-recognized Libyan government.

[UK] Public health expert who slammed government coronavirus response speaks out against antisemitism attacks

thecanary.com reports: A public health expert has come under attack, accused of “radical leftism” and antisemitism. Professor John Ashton was chair of the UK Public Health Association and was north-west regional director of public health between 1993 and 2006. He made a number of high profile media appearances earlier in the year, including interviews on Newsnight, Panorama and as a panellist on Question Time. Ashton was highly critical of the Conservative government’s mishandling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis. All his challenges to government policy have been well-founded.

How Experiences With Racial Prejudice [in Canada] Have Impacted My Life and Career

thriveglobal.com reports: When I moved to Canada from Trinidad, I was the only Indian kid in our second-grade class. But at that age, it didn’t seem to matter. All my teachers and classmates quickly learned how to pronounce my name (Nan-DIH-nee; rhymes with Anthony; not Nan-dee-nee.) I remember going on field trips with parent chaperones and sleepovers with my friends and how some of these moms and dads even wanted me to date their sons. They thought I was smart and pretty and liked me for me. Things started to change in high school. When I was thirteen, I remember going to a public pool with my friends. We had been in the water for hours and were getting ready to head home. I was the first one to finish getting changed and went outside to wait for my friends. Two men in their twenties were sitting nearby. One of them wondered aloud what time it was and saw that I was wearing a watch. Before I could say anything, his friend piped up and said: “she probably doesn’t speak English.” They both laughed and carried on with their conversation.

Rabbi Wittenberg Speaks About Judaism and Equality After the Murder of George Floyd

faith-matters.org reports:  The shocking and cruel death of George Floyd at the hands of a policeman, and the racism, contempt and injustice it has highlighted, shock our societies and souls. The violence which has followed is frightening. But the vast majority of protesters and protests have been peaceful and courageous, and how and by whom the destruction has been manipulated remains complex, sinister and opaque. The record of disdain from the highest office has inflamed the land and disgraces the history of often brave American leadership. Reverend Anthony Jackson, whose grandfather founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference together with Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, addressed the Jewish community in the columns of The Forward. What we need from you, he wrote, is to help us put an end the murder of innocent Blacks with the exact same fervour, dedication and commitment that you show towards preserving and defending your own families, that you show for Israel…. We need you to understand that Blacks and Jews are in this together; white racists view you as the N-word, too. We need you to embrace Blacks as absolute equals. Jews have used their influence to make a difference in society… We need you to use it again. We need each other.

Voice Of America: Hezbollah Called To Reform Amid Protests, Political Pressure, Possible Sanctions

counterextremism.com reports: “Protests in Beirut in recent days over government corruption and mismanagement quickly escalated into rioting and sectarian violence that included clashes between Shi’ite Hezbollah supporters and other demonstrators. Analysts say there are now renewed calls for the powerful Hezbollah militia, also represented in the government and parliament, to disarm. Analysts say Lebanon may be facing its biggest threat to stability since the end of the country’s 15-year civil war in 1990. A spiralling economic crisis, the coronavirus outbreak, and national protests have raised fears of a new slide into sectarian violence. While demanding better living conditions and tougher measures to fight corruption, demonstrators are urging Hezbollah to disarm. That demand ignited violent rage from supporters of the powerful Shi’ite paramilitary group backed by Iran, forcing Lebanese President Michel Aoun to call for national unity

Israel seeks to bypass PA, directly engage with Palestinians

al-monitor.com reports: Israel has been seeking to open direct communication channels with the Palestinians, in an attempt to weaken the decision of the Palestinian leadership, which President Mahmoud Abbas announced May 19, to disengage from all agreements with Israel, including the security and civil ties. In this context, Israeli officials have created social media pages in Arabic, namely the Facebook page of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) and that of the spokesman for the Israeli army, Avichay Adraee. Israel is also attempting to communicate with Palestinian citizens through Israeli civil administration offices.
