Canada’s national broadcaster (CBC) at its worst!

LATEST UPDATE! The Jerusalem Post reports: “Israel’s role was ‘indispensable’ in saving the lives of the ‘White Helmet’ rescue workers and their families, Canada’s Deputy Head of Mission Anthony Hinton told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. ‘From Canada’s perspective, Israel’s role was indispensable… there was no way to save these Syrians without Israel’s coordination, collaboration and leadership,’ Hinton, who was acting ambassador during the operation, said in a telephone interview. ‘The IDF were the ones who made it happen on the ground,’ he stressed.”

CBC’s Appalling Coverage of Israel’s Daring Rescue of Syria’s White Helmets

Though Israel won widespread praise for its leading role and brave humanitarian efforts in the daring rescue of hundreds of individuals associated with Syria’s White Helmets, our public broadcaster, the CBC, produced truly appalling coverage that maligned Israel’s efforts.

Amazingly, though media outlets wide and far prominently acknowledged Israel’s integral role in the dangerous rescue mission, a CBCNews.ca report on July 22 failed to even mention Israel’s efforts at all. A report by senior defence reporter Murray Brewster entitled:Canada to accept up to 250 Syrian White Helmet volunteers, family after dramatic escape” originally only detailed how “Several hundred people — volunteers and their families — belonging to the rescue organization known as the White Helmets were extracted late Saturday from the southwestern portion of the war-torn country that’s being overrun by forces loyal to leader Bashar al-Assad.”

The story lead by mentioning (emphasis added): “Canada is among three Western nations that will accept hundreds of volunteer emergency workers plucked from Syria under the cover of darkness in a dramatic international rescue, CBC News has learned.” Untold in the entire article was that it was Israel who evacuated 400 White Helmets rescuers and their families from Syria to Jordan overnight at the request of the United States, Canada and European countries, as noted by Al Jazeera for example.

In a complaint sent by HRC to senior CBC Editors at 8:11am on Sunday, July 22, we asked why this vital information was not mentioned in Mr. Brewster’s report. After all, Mr. Brewster had mentioned the following other countries who were involved in the operation when saying (emphasis added): “The volunteers were spirited out of Syria in a highly secret international operation that involved the U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada, multiple sources told CBC News. Canada was not involved militarily in the evacuation, but helped lead the effort to bring them out of Syria and into Jordan.”

Again, why did this CBCNews.ca report by Mr. Brewster not mention that it was Israel who extracted them? We called on CBC to take immediate corrective action. Subsequent to our complaint, the CBC “updated” its report to acknowledge Israel’s integral role. The report now states in the lead: “Canada is among three Western nations that will take in nearly a hundred volunteer emergency workers and their families that Israeli forces plucked from Syria under the cover of darkness in a dramatic international rescue, CBC News has learned.”

The article continued by mentioning that:

The Israeli military said Sunday it was responsible for rescuing members of the Syrian volunteer organization from the volatile frontier area and evacuated them to a third country — the first such Israeli intervention in Syria’s lengthy civil war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement on Sunday saying the rescue came about as a result of recent requests by U.S. President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘and others.”These are people who have saved lives and whose lives were in danger,’ Netanyahu said of the White Helmets. ‘Therefore, I approved their passage through Israel to additional countries as an important humanitarian gesture.’”

As well, the following tweet from the Israel Defense Forces was published by the CBC:Nevertheless, the question that remains to be answered by the CBC is why wasn’t this important information included in its original reporting? We await the CBC’s official response to our complaint. CBC’s biased reporting about Israel’s rescue efforts of the White Helmets continued on July 23 with a report by Susan Ormiston on CBC The National. In a report about how the White Helmets became targets, Ms Ormiston stated the following (emphasis added):

Last week, as the war crept closer to Israel’s border with Syria, Prime Minister Netanyahu was asked to help the White Helmets out. Today he said the lives of the people who saved others are in danger. But his opponents accused him of trying to deflect criticism away from the escalating campaign against Gaza.”

https://www.cbc.ca/i/caffeine/syndicate/?mediaId=1283262019847

CBC viewers were then shown footage of apparent Israeli air strikes on Gaza on July 18

Ms Ormiston’s stating that Israel undertook this daring and dangerous humanitarian operation as essentially a smokescreen to deflect attention and criticism away from its military efforts in Gaza, is unfounded and was a highly editorialized and inflammatory statement, instead of being neutral and objective. There was no place for this type of statement to be present in a report of this nature, irrespective of how this may have been phrased using indirect attribution (“his opponents accused him…”.

Furthermore, Israel is not carrying out a “campaign against Gaza”, it’s carrying out defensive operations against Hamas terrorists who have launched hundreds of rockets and incendiary devices across the border. We told the CBC in a complaint filed on July 24, that we strongly feel that immediate corrective action must be undertaken by the CBC to remedy this serious situation.

We await the CBC’s official response to our complaint.

It doesn’t end there though. In an interview broadcast on CBC Radio’s The Current on July 24 with guest host Megan Williams, CBC interviewed Bessma Momani, Senior Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation at the University of Waterloo, who outrageously claimed that Israel was attempting to “overplay” its role in the rescue efforts, brag, and was actually putting the White Helmets at risk.

To listen to the interview click here and go to the 49: 00-minute mark. Here’s a short transcript (emphasis added):

Momani: “But I would also point out that the Israelis, particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli Army have tried to overplay, frankly, their involvement making this very much about a rescue that they committed and I would point out that that actually really harms the remaining White Helmets inside the country. So It’s really disturbing to see the Israelis take this line because it really just endangers them.”

CBC Anchor Williams: “How does it endanger them?”

Momani: “Well, quite frankly, it sort of feeds into the narrative of both the Syrians and Russian propaganda that somehow the White Helmets are western agents. So the remaining ones, we know that not all 800 that were sort of initially promised to come through were able to make the journey some of them got held back by roadblocks and fighting, now they’re in great peril and I think that’s really the unintended consequence of Netanyahu trying to get bragging rights out of this.”

Momani made these statements without any challenge from CBC guest Anchor Megan Williams. Indeed, Momani made similar comments on CTV News on July 22 where she felt it necessary to claim that Israel doesn’t deserve credit and that it did not have a “benevolent” policy. On Twitter she wrote:

Bessma Momani

@b_momani

This is key and to give Israel credit will only add to government and Russia propaganda that White Helmets are western agents. Media folks please don’t buy in to Netanyahu’s line either. Facts are key.

Elizabeth Tsurkov

@Elizrael

A lot of misreporting about the rescue of the @SyriaCivilDef & relatives from southern Syria tonight. The number of people rescued that’s being reported is incorrect. More importantly, this is an operation involving multiple countries working together. Israel is merely a conduit.

Momani’s interview on CTV News can be seen here:

%22%3A%22ctv.ctvnews%22%2C%22adzone%22%3A%22embed%22%7D%7D%5D

While Ms. Momani is entitled to her own opinions, it’s noteworthy to mention that it was Israel who “spirited” the White Helmets into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, before being moved to a camp in neighbouring Jordan. The Globe and Mail reported that: “The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) led the rescue effort, which was done at the request of Canada, Britain and Germany, who all committed to resettling evacuees. The operation was also supported by the United States. This extraordinary mission came together to save the White Helmets and their families, years after these medical teams first started working to save civilian lives in rebel-held areas amid the Syrian civil war.” Meanwhile, the Canadian Press and the Toronto Star wrote that the “dramatic rescue” was “orchestrated by the Israeli military and personally encouraged by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.”

TAKE ACTION NOW: As we’ve chronicled, CBC’s coverage on its website, radio and tv which maligned Israel’s daring rescue efforts of Syria’s White Helmets is deserving of your condemnation. We ask that all HonestReporting Canada subscribers file complaints, just as we’ve done already, with CBC Editor-in-Chief Jennifer McGuire. Please send emails as soon as possible to: Jennifer.McGuire@cbc.ca.

Canada: A Misrepresentation Of Justice

The Case of  Helmut Oberlander

“February 28, 2000 was my first day of work at Canadian Jewish Congress. I was handed a thick wad of paper and told, ‘This is a federal court decision. Read it and tell me what you think.’ That was my introduction to the story of Helmut Oberlander.”

by Len Rudner

       by Len Rudner

Oberlander was a translator for ek10a, a unit within Einstazgruppe D, one of four groups that followed the Wehrmacht into Russia following the invasion of that country by the Nazis in 1941. The Einsatzgruppen, though, were not combat units. Rather they were special units that had been constituted with a single brutal purpose: to murder civilians. Most of their victims were Jews.

Even today, when most lay people think of the Holocaust, they think of the industrial factories of death – Auschwitz, Belzec, Chelmno, Treblinka, Sobibor and Majdanek – but before these places of destruction were created, the Final Solution was carried out by men with rifles, pistols and machine guns, and death was meted out at the edge of a mass grave. It is estimated that as many as 1.3 million Jewish men, women and children were murdered by members of the Einsatzgruppen, the mobile killing units.

Some of those murdered may have been members of my family, their lives in the city of Buczacz (Ukraine) cut cruelly short in July 1942.

Helmut Oberlander came to Canada in 1954 and, according to the findings of the Federal Court in 2000, misrepresented his war-time activities in order to gain entry to Canada and was later given the privilege of Canadian citizenship. There is no suggestion that Oberlander engaged in war crimes or that, colloquially speaking, he ever “pulled the trigger.” But as a member of a mobile killing unit he was a member of an organization with a single brutal purpose. Had his membership been known he would not have been admitted to Canada. On this basis the Governor in Council moved for the removal of his citizenship and his deportation, a determination known as D&D or denaturalization and deportation.

Helmut Oberlander

    Helmut Oberlander

Over the last 16 years, Oberlander has successfully launched one appeal after another. First, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled that the government must show that they have taken into account Oberlander’s comportment while he has been a citizen of Canada, and the matter was returned to the government for reconsideration.

A second order for revocation of citizenship was overturned in 2009 because the Court deemed that some consideration should be given to the matter of duress – despite the fact that Oberlander and his lawyers had never themselves raised this matter.

Finally, on February 15 of this year, the Court overturned a 2012 revocation order, indicating that the mere membership in ek10a was insufficient to deprive Oberlander of his citizenship.

The government of Canada must now decide whether they will make a fourth attempt to remove Oberlander’s citizenship and remove him from Canada. At age 92 it may well be that Father Time will deal with him first.

One of the advantages of not being a judge is that I can begin my sentences with words like, “I find it inconceivable that…”

I find it inconceivable that Oberlander could be a member of a mobile killing unit for 18 months and not comprehend the mission of ek10a.

I find it inconceivable that a translator in one of the smallest of the 4Einsatzgruppen would have no interaction with the targeted population and would never have facilitated the work of that unit by translating and transmitting orders to the frightened Jews. SS-Brigadefuhrer Otto Ohlendorf was the commander of Einsatzgruppe D and gave the following description of their modus operandi:

The Einsatz unit would enter a village or town and order the prominent Jewish citizens to call together all Jews for the purpose of “resettlement.” They were requested to hand over their valuables and shortly before execution to surrender their outer clothing. They were transported to the place of execution, usually an anti-tank ditch, in trucks – always only as many as could be executed immediately. In this way it was attempted to keep the span of time from the moment in which the victims knew what was about to happen to them until the time of their actual execution as short as possible.

I find it inconceivable that the possibility of duress can even be considered when the Federal Court previously ruled that Oberlander never took steps to escape or be relieved of his duties. In the words of Justice James Russell, Oberlander “stayed with ek10a and there is no evidence that he didn’t want to be there.”

I can imagine why Oberlander would not have asked for a transfer. After all, being a translator for a unit charged with murdering defenseless civilians would have been a pretty soft assignment. The food was good and nobody was shooting at you. Considering the alternative of being a combat soldier facing the Russian Army, being part of a unit that killed Jews must have seemed like an obvious choice once moral scruples were packed away. While not a universal choice it was certainly a popular one: consider the recently concluded trial in Germany of Oscar Groning, the so-called Accountant of Auschwitz who never killed anyone but through his presence helped to keep the machinery running.

What I do not understand is how the Federal Court of Canada has, on three separate occasions, found ways to avoid the simple truth and the obvious conclusion: Helmut Oberlander gained entry to Canada – and citizenship – through fraudulent means. He has never had a right to be in Canada. He should not be here now.

We Have Lost Our Way

Jew-hate is not an option. But for many, they thrive on it. Don’t dismiss it.

As we come to the end of January 2016, let’s take a few minutes to dwell on the sickness that pervades the Middle East and in Europe. Yes, you’re probably rolling your eyes, your eyebrows have reached the upper limits of your forehead, and you’ve started to sigh and shake your head in dismay. So, let’s go right into what I have to say.

by Alan Simons

   by Alan Simons

Jew-hate item one: “While the victim of terror attack, Dafna Meir 36, and a mother of six children, was being laid to rest in Jerusalem, a Palestinian Facebook page with more than four million followers posted the horrendous picture above. The word written in the middle of the picture is ‘Otniel’, the name of the community where the terror attack took place. After the community’s name, a bloody knife emblazoned with a Palestinian flag on the handle is depicted above words that praise the terrorist. This is a prime example of murderous Palestinian incitement on social media that encourages terror attacks against Israelis and needs to be stopped immediately!”

Jew-hate item two: “The father of the teenage Arab terrorist who murdered mother of six Dafna Meir in her home on Sunday night has expressed pride over his son’s gruesome actions. Murad Bader Abdullah Adais fatally stabbed Meir at the front door to her house in Otniel, as she valiantly struggled to close the door on him and prevent him from slaughtering three of her children who were with her at the time. Adais then fled on foot, sparking a major manhunt which resulted in his capture early Tuesday morning. Speaking to Palestinian media, Adais’s father said he was proud of his son for stabbing the unarmed nurse to death. “I am proud of him,” he said, adding that security forces also detained and interrogated several family members during the arrest operation.”

James McGreevey, the former Governor of New Jersey, was once quoted as saying we are losing sight of civility in government and politics. Debate and dialogue is taking a back seat to the politics of destruction and anger and control. Dogma has replaced thoughtful discussion between people of differing views.

I find it hard not to disagree with McGreevey, other than to say in my opinion we have already lost it, not just in government and politics, but within society! The sickness that is consuming people, coupled with their utter hate and cruelty towards anything that resembles the likes of a Jew, has become intolerable. So let’s call a spade a spade, stop making a plethora of platitudes and excuses for our fellow man, and look directly at some of this month’s who’s-who in the Jew-hate category:

  • Hizbullah Deputy Secretary-General Na’im Qassem at Beirut Conference for Palestine said: “Our Goal Is To Eliminate Israel.”
  • A pregnant woman hurt in a stabbing near Jerusalem, Michal Fruman, 30, moderately wounded in terror attack in Tekoa; her unborn baby was unharm; the terrorist was shot and critically wounded by an armed civilian.
  •  Fatah-run Awdah TV broadcast a music video explicitly calling to murder Israelis all over Israel – “in all their neighborhoods.” The song calls on Palestinians to “drown them in a sea of blood, kill them as you wish.”
  • Abbas’ Fatah movement posted an uncensored version of the picture of dead terrorist murderer Nashat Melhem lying in a pool of blood. It also praised the killer of three a “Martyr” and congratulated him on its official Facebook page.
  • Fatah’s branch in Bethlehem marked Fatah Day on January 7, 2016 with a parade in the Dheisheh refugee camp featuring masked men brandishing firearms and axes, as well as children armed with mock RPG rockets and suicide belts.
  • A man wearing a kippah was attacked and robbed in Germany in an antisemitic attack by refugees from Syria and Afghanistan on the island of Puttgarden. The victim was a 49 year old French businessman who was pushed to the floor and robbed by the attackers as they yelled “Yahud’ Arabic for Jew. They took his shoulder bag that contained money, a cellphone and other valuables.

Hizb ut-Tahrir

Be it the Daesh, Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hizb ut Tahrir, Al-Qaeda or Al-Sabireen, these vile miscreants are tarred with the same brush; they all hate Jews.

Back to Jew-hate filled Gaza. How many of the western media are writing about Al-Sabireen, the newest terrorist group in the Gaza Strip?

  • “The new Iranian-backed Al-Sabireen was established in wake of tensions between Iran and its two former allies in the Gaza Strip: Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis four years ago, relations between Tehran and Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been strained. […]  Al-Sabireen, whose emblem is identical to that of another Iran proxy, Hezbollah, so far has about 400 followers in the Gaza Strip. Each one receives a monthly salary of $250-$300, while the senior officials of the group get at least $700.”

And what, if any, was the reaction in the western media to Hamas’ spokesman Fawzi Barhoum when he said, “Let me say loud and clear to our people in the West Bank: anyone who has a knife, a club, a weapon, or a car, yet does not use it to run over a Jew…and does not use it to kill dozens of Zionists, does not belong to Palestine.”

  • A local French politician was been found dead in his apartment with multiple stab wounds. Alain Ghozland, 73, a Republican councillor from Creteil near Paris, which has a large Jewish population. A family member told Metro News that the body showed signs of both stabbing and beating, but police have no leads on the investigation yet.
  • And while much of the western media insist on regurgitating the question, “Why hasn’t Israel lifted the Gaza blockade,” none of them seem to be at all interested in the fact, and I quote: “Since the 2013 Egyptian coup d’état in which president Mohammad Morsi was ousted by General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egyptian authorities have kept the border crossing almost totally closed. Twenty-two days into 2016, the Rafah border crossing has been closed and Gazans lack supplies of basic goods such as gas and electricity. Currently, the chances of the crossing being reopened are low, given Egypt’s declaration that it will not open it before the fifth anniversary of the 2011 uprising.”

By the way, the fifth anniversary is on Monday, January 25. Watch for plenty of hate, smoke and fire on the day. Know doubt the Jew-haters will find cause to blame any deaths on the Jewish holiday of Tu BiShvat, which also occurs on January 25.

In Canada, where I live, the country where we are in the process of extending a welcome to some 25,000 Syrian refugees of various faiths, we are also not immune to Jew-hate. Here’s what Honest Reporting Canada had to say earlier this week.

“”Writing in the Globe and Mail on December 14, Michael Bell, former Canadian ambassador to Israel and co-director of the Jerusalem Old City Initiative, excused Palestinian terrorism while baselessly charging that a “Judaization” of Jerusalem exists. In truth, Bell’s op-ed was just another example of Palestinian incitement.

“Without substantiation, Bell claimed Israeli “zealots” are attempting to change the Temple Mount’s status quo while seeking the destruction of the Al Aqsa Mosque, efforts which Bell claimed are prompting Palestinians to commit terrorism.

“Bell claimed: “The spate of frequent and growing knife attacks has been provoked by the perhaps unsurprising misperception that Mr. Netanyahu plans to change the “status quo” step by step, given the pressures he is subject to.””

And in conclusion, in Sweden, the repugnant Israel-bashing Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom continues to make outrageous claims. Recently it was reported “she called on Israel to halt what she called ‘extrajudicial executions’ in response to attacks by knife-wielding Palestinians.”

We have lost our way. What politician, what member of society, has the will and fortitude to help change it? Depressing, isn’t?
